Minutes of Organic Buddies–January 29, 2005

The next meeting will be on February 26th at the UU Church. Nureese will speak to us about her homemade bread and will also have some samples. She is something of an herbalist here in Lima.

We have a new member, Kay Heaston. Louise and Marilyn decided this wasn’t for them.

Jay Smith spoke to us about community-supported agriculture. It’s a cooperative system in which people buy a share of the harvest at the beginning of the season or whenever the farmer buys his seeds, and the people share the harvest. In Jay’s case a person or household or a few people together would buy a share at $375, and get a box of assorted fresh vegetables each week from May to October of whatever’s in season. If you don’t like a particular vegetable in your box, he will have a "swap box" so you can trade out what you don’t like for something you do. The boxes can be picked up at the Farmer’s Market downtown or at his farm in Cridersville. The vegetables are grown without chemicals, using methods that Jay has used for the last 25 years.

Jay handed out sign-up sheets and sheets that explain his business, so if you need some, ask Adaline or me.

Jay says there’s a man named Bob Parson in Cridersville who makes honey. He has found a non-chemical way of treating the apiaries for the mites that threatened to seriously curtail the honey industry. Bob’s system has made news nation-wide, as it’s the only chemical-free way that works.

Old Business

Lima Superior Credit Union (now Superior Federal Credit Union) is the only one around that can deal with businesses; they offer free everything. BankOne will give us free everything for one year and then they’ll have to charge us. MD moved to set up an account with Superior, I seconded, the motion passed. Adaline as president will be one signature on the account, and the other one will be Aimee as treasurer.

Discussion of our constitution and what should be in it is tabled until next month.

New Business

Next March Adaline will talk to us about her organic soaps and other products.

Carol says the Seventh Day Adventist Store is open Tuesday from 1:00-6:00PM.

MD reported that we have a new website. Go to uulima.org and click on Organic Buddies.

We have a new spreadsheet/order form which can be printed from the website (remember to tell your printer to print in landscape format!).

Adaline reports that our new customer service rep is Eileen, whose picture is on page 194 of this month’s catalog.

Some of us thought that we could order less than a case of items, so we could order just like buying groceries at the store. Adaline thinks we need to order by the case pack. She will double-check with Eileen about this.

Updated rosters are being emailed to those with email, and sent by regular mail to those who don’t. They will also be available at the UU Church, as will these minutes.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Wilson
